ARTICULATION TOWARD A DOCTORAL DEGREE

Have you begun to think about a doctoral degree? This is not something every person thinks about when beginning a graduate certificate or a Masters degree program. However, it can happen as you begin to feel yourself grow, change, and realize what you are capable of intellectually. You may even begin to think about your own future career-wise and realize that a doctoral degree could be the appropriate move for you. I know that happened to me when I began my Masters. Frankly, I never believed I would go for a Masters when I finished undergraduate work, but when I did something happened during my Masters: I realized I could do the work and also enjoyed what was happening to me in terms of my thinking and writing skills.

Here are a couple of things to think about in regard to this point. To begin with, Dean Sundberg has asked me to look into articulation possibilities with several doctoral degree granting programs. I will begin that process and see if some of the institutions of higher education programs in our area with such doctoral programs in Adult Education and others in various parts of the country that I have high regard for would be interested in a formal or informal agreement that would facilitate Elmira College graduates transferring to their programs. I will certainly keep you informed on my progress with such agreements. Secondly, if you are thinking about tackling the doctoral degree down the road, I urge you to build all the skills you can now that will help you later. Striving for the grade of A, improving your writing skills, attending state, regional, and national conference, presenting papers at conferences, attempting to get material published, and enhancing your "thinking" skills are all things you could do to be more competitive. If you are interested in such a step, feel free to dialogue with me or any other faculty members regarding your abilities, what we believe you should aim for, and general advice on the value of the doctoral degree.

ATTENDING CONFERENCES

Speaking of attending conferences, be sure to look at the calendar of upcoming events for possibilities. I encourage each of you to consider attending at least one regional or national conference during your graduate program efforts if at all possible. Talk to a faculty member for recommendations.

MOTEL ROOMS FOR SPRING OR SUMMER COURSES IN ELMIRA

We anticipate that there will be some dormitory space available for summer courses. However, for the summer and for the spring courses, you may want some information on motel accommodations for Elmira. It appears some start as low as $30 per night. Information on motels will be available in the book cabinet in our classroom or, if you prefer, a copy can be mailed of faxed to you. Contact Roger for such information.

GOOD LUCK GENE!

It is with both sadness and pride that we say a fond farewell and best wishes to Dr. Gene Roche. Gene has accepted a position as Director of Communications and Professional Development at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Gene has been a wonderful colleague, a well-respected professor/teacher for several years, and an inspiration to many. His doctoral work at Syracuse University in Adult Education was outstanding, his professional work at Hamilton College has been instrumental in their developing one of the best career placement and development centers in the country, and his professional consulting has earned him a national reputation as one of the most knowledgeable experts there is in the area of career development. Keep your eye on Gene; I am predicting he will one day be a college president or have some other very prestigious position in higher education.

CAREER PLANNING?

Matriculated students may use the Elmira College Career Planning Office to establish a Credential and Placement file if one has not already been established and kept up to date at their baccalaureate institution. Call 607-735-1830 for a packet of information if you need one. Credentials will be sent (in a handsome purple folder) to prospective employers for a $5 fee per request. There is no annual fee to maintain your file.

NEED A BOOK

Do you need a particular book or periodical and can’t find it at the Syracuse University library? Check to see if the Elmira College library has it by looking at the college web page (www.elmira.edu), clicking on the library, selecting the online public access catalog, typing in "library" at the login, and then putting in the appropriate letter for your search activity. If you have a difficulty attempting this, contact Roger for help.
