JOBS! JOBS! JOBS!

Dee Macheda had a great suggestion that we would like to implement in the near future. Let's have a networking information exchange on possible jobs in the Central New York area. We can use this newsletter (which comes out 9 times a year) for part of it. Thus, please email Roger any job possibilities you know of and it will become part of the next newsletter. In addition, we will explore the development of a bulletin board in our BOCES classroom near the book cabinet on which job notices can be placed. If you have any additional ideas, let Roger know.

ADVISING SESSIONS

Elmira College's Office of Continuing Education will have an advising session on Tuesday, March 24, from 4-6:00 p.m. (or even beyond 6 p.m. if there are sufficient numbers requesting appointments). The sessions will be held at BOCES. If you have not yet had a session to determine your future courses or lay out your Program of Study, or if you have any colleagues who would like to find out more about Elmira College’s graduate programs, this is a great opportunity. Call the Office of Continuing Education at 607-735-1825 to reserve a spot.

FIRST GRADUATION

Donna Gates Thomas, the first CNY student who will finish the Masters degree (this coming summer--congratulations Donna), will go through the graduation ceremonies on May 31, at 11 a.m. There also is a graduate student reception on Saturday, May 30, 7:30 p.m. These activities are open to any of us. Even if you are not finishing this summer, you may want to attend to get a feel for your involvement next year.

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS FOR SUMMER COURSES

Elsewhere in this newsletter is information on the spring and summer courses. It is possible that dorm space will be available at least in the summer, for minimal costs. Motel space also is available at reasonable costs. More specific information will be included in the next newsletter.

DISTANCE EDUCATION

We are in the process of developing a new course for Elmira College. The working title is "Distance Education," and it is an opportunity to keep up with this rapidly emerging area of instructional and application. If the course is approved, it would be held this coming summer in Elmira, with the first three days early in the month of June, then time equivalent to one day would be spent over a subsequent period actually using a form of distance education, computer mediated conversation (CMC), and a final wrap-up day back on campus later in the month. A prerequisite for the course is that each student would need to have easy access to a computer and an Internet account that provides access to email and the World Wide Web.

SUMMER COURSES AT BOCES

Following is the schedule for our summer courses. Registration information will be available soon:

1. AED 5000 Adult Education: Foundations of Practice (3 cr.) Hiemstra, June 8-12, 8:30 a.m.-5:10 p.m. (Core A)

2. PSY 5112 Psychology of the Adult Learner (3 cr.) LeClair, Thur., 5:30-9:45 p.m., June 4-July 30 (Core B)

3. AED 5020 Program Development and Evaluation (3 cr.) Burns, July 6-9, 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and July 10, 8:00 a.m.-noon (Core B)

HAPPY READING

I have had the good fortune to hear Denis Waitley in person a couple of times. He is a dynamic speaker and he always makes me think. I also have listened to a couple of his motivational audiotapes and like to play them in my car occasionally when I am driving a long distance. I read one of his books and can recommend it highly. Following is a brief review.

Waitley, D. (1995). Empires of the mind. New York: William Morrow and Company, Inc. 266 pgs., Index. Waitley provides a number of ideas (what he calls lessons) that will help guide our thinking and actions in the growing knowledge-based world in which we all must survive. He truly believes that "self-leadership" is the only way we can build our knowledge and skills to carry out that survival. In many respects, he embraces the notions of self-directed learning that I believe in so much. In Empires of the mind, he offers many personal strategies for developing that self-leadership that he feels is mandatory to getting and staying ahead in our world that is accelerating so fast forward, where knowledge is the ultimate power, where human resources are more valuable than natural resources, and where the only rule really is change and our ability to adapt to it. I highly recommend it.
