Papers at Syracuse University, Arents Library, of which there are 103 archival boxes. The Sheats papers are particularly strong in the periods immediately proceeding and during World War II. As a Yale Traveling Fellow in 1935, Sheats visited Germany and toured the Nazi educational system meeting with students and teachers from kindergarten through the university level. Among his papers are extensive notes on this visit.

Born in Tiffin, OH, son of Edward Hamlin and Katherin Ann Sheats. Married Dorothea Burns, 1929 (one son); married Helen Taylor, 1942 (three children); divorced 1967; Married June M. Dow, 1967 (one reference sheet without an identifying name said he had five children total). President, Department of Adult Education, National Education Association. US Delegate, UNESCO Conference on Adult Education, Elsimore, Denmark in 1949. Member of the UNESCO National Commission, 1950 -56. US Delegate, 7th General Conference on Adult Education, Paris, France, 1952. Vice Chair, Executive Committee of the UNESCO National Committee, 1954 -56. US Delegate, Adult Education Conference, Montreal, Canada, 1960. Member, President's Panel on Vocational Education, 1961 -62. Kellogg Resident Fellow, Oxford University, 1967. President, Adult Education Association of the U.S.A., 1967. Delbert Clark Adult Education Award, 1970. Julius M. Note Award, 1975. Dr. Sheats influenced the field of adult education from the 1930's through the 1960's as a writer, administrator, educator, researcher, and leader in adult education organizations. His primary goals for adult education addressed the necessity for citizen awareness of the meaning and definition of political and social structures. He also promoted the value of citizen interaction and communication regarding the effectiveness of any community. He believed that in a free society intent upon remaining free, lifelong learning must be embraced as a major instrument through which the process of self -government can be maintained.
