Born in Wapella, Saskatchewan, Canada.  Son of John and Muriel (Robbins) Kidd.  Married Margaret Edith, 1941-08-18.  Children:  Bruce, Ross, Alice, David, and Dorothy.  Raised in Gibson's Landing, British Columbia.  First Canadian citizen to earn doctorate in adult education.  Awarded the Order of Canada, 1975.  Awarded Tolley Medal in 1973 by Syracuse University [SU].  After his death in 1982, was named a fellow of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education [OISE].

Published more than 20 books and at least one thousand articles, papers, reports, and pamphlets.  The following is a particularly important book:

 

Kidd, J. R.  HOW ADULTS LEARN.  New York, NY: Association Press, 1959.  This book was revised in 1973. It became a standard text in the field and was translated into more than ten languages.

 

Kidd was founder and editor for years of CONVERGENCE, the first international journal on adult education, published in four languages.
