SPRING TRAINING OF TRAINER'S CONFERENCE

We are very excited to announce the "first" annual Spring Workshop for professional trainers and educators of adults, "New Developments in Training," Saturday, April 17, 1999. Spend a day in Elmira and receive the latest information, knowledge, and techniques on training and educating adults. We are searching out a renowned speaker who will serve as keynoter. Several concurrent sessions will highlight the activities and students are invited to submit proposals to lead a session. This proposal and review process will enable us to provide the best possible training opportunities to participants. Students in the 1998-99 Graduate Certificate program in Elmira and Liverpool will help coordinate the function. A luncheon and closing reception are included during which those eligible receive their graduate certificates. So mark your calendars for this excellent training opportunity and tell your work colleagues, too. More information will follow in subsequent newsletters and mailings.

SUMMER INSTITUTE

We are very excited to announce a new 1999 summer institute on the Elmira College campus. This will be a great opportunity to take a course from some of the best adult education professors in the country and for Liverpool students to pick up residency courses. We will advertise the institute nationally so anticipate there will be some students attending from other parts of the country, too, and perhaps even from outside the United States so what a great professional networking opportunity. Following is the first draft of what will become one of our advertising flyers. Thus, mark your calendars, make your plans, and bring family members along, too.

An academic advising session will be held on Monday, October 19, 4-7 pm. It will be held at the OCM BOCES building in Liverpool. Appointments are required. Anyone planning to graduate next spring or summer should be sure to have an advising session this fall term to finalize course and program of study decisions. Liverpool students, if you have not already had a session or if you can't make the October 19 session, call Roger Hiemstra to schedule one.

PROFESSION WRITING OPPORTUNITY

The PAACE (Pennsylvania Association for Adult and Continuing Education) Journal of Lifelong Learning is looking for journal articles; manuscripts from graduate students are welcome. Thus, if one of your professors suggested you publish a term paper or if you simply have a good idea for an article contact one of the two editors, Gary Dean (gjdean@grove.iup.edu) or Trenton Ferro (trferro@grove.iup.edu) to obtain editorial policy and submission guidelines. A great opportunity!

BOOK REVIEW

I love to challenge myself from time to time by reading outside the Adult Education field. Such was the enjoyable challenge I gave myself when I read Consilience: The unity of knowledge by Edward O. Wilson (NY: Alfred A Knopf, 1998). Professor Wilson, a biologist and perhaps best known for his book on Ants, has created a masterpiece for anyone willing to dig into a heavily scientific presentation. His contention is that that the fundamental unity of all knowledge and the need to search for consilience can be organized around a few fundamental natural laws related primarily to physics and biology. His chapter on the "mind" is perhaps the best thing I have ever read to help a trainer or educator of adult understand how the brain works and how adults learn to think. I recommended it so highly to my colleague Ralph Brockett (see the Summer Institute writeup) that he is using it as a text in a course. I challenge you to read it, but be prepared to "dig" into a treasure house of knowledge, with some chapters requiring multiple readings.
