FALL TERM RECEPTION

A big congratulation to all who completed the Graduate Certificate in Training of Trainers this summer. We will honor you, meet new students, snack on light refreshments, and have a general "welcome to the new academic year" reception on Monday, September 10, 7-7:45 p.m. Jane will end PSY 5150 a half hour early and I will start EDU 5900 a half hour late, so students in Jane's class plan to stay a little later and students in my class plan to come a little early. Everyone else is welcome, too, and I hope you come. We will meet in the regular BOCES classroom. Rog

ANNUAL RETREAT

I hope you are planning to attend the annual Tri-State Retreat at Camp Arnot, September 25-27. No classes have been scheduled for this weekend. This is for faculty and students in Adult Education. The cost for the whole weekend will be under $50. We keep the costs down by doing our own food preparation, clean up, and program presentations, with each institution sharing in the responsibilities. Camp Arnot is about 20 minutes south of Ithaca. Each year graduate students and faculty in Adult Education from Buffalo State, Cornell, Elmira College, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, and Rutgers gather for a weekend of fun, relaxation, and education. People from Fordham will join us this year. Let me know if you are planning to attend all or part of the retreat by sending an email, a letter, a fax, or tell me in person. I will coordinate the car-pooling. Following is the tentative schedule. Please volunteer to be part of a committee that plans our meal and the program presentation. If you can't serve on a committee, send me your ideas for a program and the meal. Rog

TRAINING OF TRAINERS CONFERENCE

We are planning an exciting Training conference for next summer in Elmira. Current students, alumni from the graduate certificate in Training of Trainers and the Adult Education Masters degree, and the general public will be invited. A national speaker will be in attendance and the latest in adult teaching and training techniques will highlight this conference. This year's Training of Trainers students will help run the conference and attendance will be required for them. We think this will be a wonderful experience and there is nothing like it in the country so feel pride for what we will be doing. Additional information will be distributed and contained in future newsletters.

REGISTER FOR CLASSES

Remember to register for fall classes as early as you can so we make sure we have adequate resources. If you have not received a graduate catalog (it contains the course schedule and registration materials), let me know immediately. If you need an advising session before you sign up, give Judy Clack or me a call. Remember, if you are planning to graduate next spring or summer, you will need to take AED 6000 in the winter. This course can only be taken as one of your last few courses, so plan ahead in terms of how many credits you take this fall.

CONTRATULATIONS RENEE!!!

Renee Downey, husband Dana Hart, their children, and Holly Haines will be spending several weeks in Egypt this fall working on a training contract. We are proud of you and send us back some students.

Because of Renee's absence, we have made some faculty changes in the fall schedule from what you will see in the graduate catalog or other literature you may have received. Please note the changes shown below (including a couple of date changes) and thanks to Jane LeClair and Paul Blair for agreeing to add teaching responsibilities.

WEDDING BELLS!

Our congratulations go out to Ed Laprade. He and Renate Eaton will be married on September 26 in Rochester. We wish both of you the very best. "Two lives, two hearts joined together in friendship, united forever in love."

ADVISING SESSION

The fall advising session will be Monday, October 19, 1998, from 4 - 7 p.m. If you want to graduate in the spring or summer (1999) or if you're just beginning, this session will be especially important. Call Roger (315-637-0029) or the Office of Graduate and Advanced Studies (607-735-1825) to set up an appointment. Appointments are necessary.

PORTFOLIO OPPORTUNITY

If you are working on or planning to enroll in the Masters program and have not already received one, ask Roger for a copy of the portfolio development guidelines. A personal portfolio will be an important part of AED 6000, the graduate seminar that you take near the end of your studies. It is important that you start early in developing categories, organizing course materials and products, and pulling together the materials you will need.

CNY-CACE

CNY-CACE is the Central New York Coalition for Adult and Continuing Education. It is dedicated to providing ongoing continuing education opportunities to teachers and trainers of adults residing in Central New York. The organization has monthly breakfast meetings with a special program and the opportunity to network with others. They also co-sponsor an annual adult education conference (see the Calendar of Upcoming Events). See Roger Hiemstra or John Burns for additional information. Talk to your faculty or fellow students about other organizations in the area.
